Instructor and Student Enrollments for Canvas Courses
Due to FERPA requirements, Teacher and Student enrollments in Canvas academic courses are managed by an automated process tied to Office of the Registrar records.
For students, this means that they must register for a course through the Office of the Registrar to be enrolled with a Student role in that course in Canvas.
For instructors, to have a Teacher role in an academic Canvas site, you must be listed as an instructor with 1% or greater responsibility in Banner for the course. Only instructors with more than 1% responsibility will have Student Learning Experience surveys created for them. Learn more about roles in Canvas.
Why don’t I see a course I am teaching?
If you are going to be teaching a course and you do not see the course in Canvas, contact your departmental scheduler to ensure you are listed as the instructor-of-record in Banner for the course. If you are listed as the instructor-of-record in Banner, contact the OSU Canvas team for help locating the course in Canvas.
How are Teaching Assistants added to Canvas courses?
For current and future term courses, Teaching Assistants should be added to Banner as an instructor with 0% responsibility. They will be automatically added to the Canvas site with the TA role.
For past-term courses, you will need to use the “Add TA…” tool in Canvas to give Teaching Assistant access (specifically the CanvasTA role) to someone. Note that a Teacher role is required to use the “Add TA…” tool.
Other possible roles available through the “Add TA…” tool include Grader, Designer, and Observer. Learn more about the different roles in Canvas. What about students with incomplete grades who need access to a past-term course?
Faculty working with a student to resolve an incomplete grade given in a past term should submit a request to restore Canvas access for the student with an incomplete.
