Clickers are continuing to evolve, along with new ways of engaging students in and out of class. More faculty were using other systems across campus and the cost was increasing for students, even though have been supporting Turning Technologies for 7 years now, therefore we conducted a needs assessment this winter & spring. Our inquiry included surveys of students and faculty; focus group sessions with faculty; analysis of support tickets, and analysis of pedagogical and assessment strategies. As a results we recommend switching from Turning Technologies to Top Hat as OSU’s centrally supported student response system in time for Fall 2018 classes.
Top Hat is a Web-based service for classroom polling and attendance that supports a variety of teaching and learning modalities. Students use a personal device (phone, tablet or laptop) to respond to questions. Top Hat will be integrated with Canvas so that faculty can upload polling results to the gradebook.
The designation of Top Hat as the centrally supported student response system was announced at Faculty Senate on June 14. We will provide more communication and specific details about the transition in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned!
There is no change in support for faculty and students using Turning this summer; we will continue to assist you throughout summer classes.
